Why pest control in Lake Oswego, Oregon is mostly a question of reach
Lake Oswego's tree canopy covers just over 44 percent of the city, the third highest of any city in Oregon, and about a quarter of those trees are bigleaf maple or Douglas fir. Mature trees and tall eaves are where bald-faced hornets build, so the job here is less about what the nest is and more about whether I can safely reach it. I carry a pole rig and ladders for exactly that, and I quote on site once I have seen the height.

Ivy is the other half of the problem
English ivy has been found on roughly a third of Lake Oswego's street trees, and where it is on the ground it forms a mat that nothing disturbs from one year to the next. That is ideal cover for a yellow jacket nest. The entrance can be a hole the size of a coin under six inches of leaf, and the first sign is usually somebody weeding.
The practical consequence is that I will ask you where you were standing when you got stung, not where you saw the insects. Yellow Jackets forage a long way from the nest, so the wasps around your table tell me very little, while the spot that made them angry tells me almost everything.
The same cover works in your favour later. Once a ground nest is dealt with, the colony does not come back to the same hole the following year, and clearing the ivy off that patch removes the next queen's best option.

There is a nest forty feet up a fir. Can you even get to it?
Sometimes, and I will tell you honestly when the answer is no. I carry an extension pole rig and ladders, and a lot of eave and low-branch nests are reachable with those. A nest genuinely high in a mature Douglas fir, away from the house and away from where anyone walks, is usually one to leave alone until the first hard frosts end it.
Do I need to clear the ivy before you come?
No, and please do not. Ivy over a ground nest is the thing that stops you being stung on the way past it. Leave it, mark the spot from a distance if you can do that safely, and let me open it up in a suit.
Does the tree cover mean I will get nests every year?
It makes it more likely than an open lot, yes. Queens want undisturbed cover and mature structure, and Lake Oswego has both in quantity. That is the main reason the quarterly plan tends to make more sense here than it does on a small suburban lot elsewhere in the metro.
Do you treat trees themselves?
No. I deal with the stinging insects nesting in or near them, not with the health of the tree. If a nest is in a cavity caused by rot, that is a conversation for an arborist once I have taken the colony out of it.
