What kind of paper wasp is nesting on your Portland, Oregon house?
Nearly every paper wasp nest I get called to in the Portland metro belongs to the European paper wasp, Polistes dominula, an introduced species that has spread to the Pacific Northwest. It's the one I find on almost every eaves call. The fastest way to name it is color: orange to yellow-orange antennae, with legs to match and very little black on either. Native paper wasps have dark antennae and a browner, more reddish body. Either way, the nest is a judgment call about where it sits, not an automatic removal.

How to tell a European paper wasp from Oregon's native paper wasps
Oregon has always had paper wasps. What changed is which one you meet. The European paper wasp is an introduced species that spread to the Pacific Northwest, and it's been reported to Oregon's invasive species hotline. If you've lived in the same Portland house for thirty years and feel like the wasp on your eaves doesn't look like the one you remember, you're probably right. It's a different wasp on the eaves than the one Oregon started with.
The tell is on the antennae. The WSU fact sheet calls the European paper wasp the only paper wasp with mostly orange antennae, and that matches what I see on the eaves: orange to yellow-orange antennae, and legs the same color, with hardly any black on either. Native paper wasps show much more black across the antennae. Look at the antennae first. They read from a few feet away better than any body marking, and the color carries clearly even in a phone photo.
The body throws people off. A European paper wasp is black with bold yellow bands, which is why so many of my calls start with someone telling me they have yellow jackets. Long legs trailing in flight and an open comb nest say paper wasp. Legs tucked up and a nest in the ground or a wall say yellow jacket removal, a different job with a different level of urgency.

These three get mixed up constantly, and it matters, because the species decides where the nest is, how big the colony gets, and how fast it needs dealing with.

Where paper wasps build umbrella nests around Portland, Oregon homes
A queen wants a dry spot with cover overhead and a clear flight path out. Your house is full of those, and these are the ones I check.
Eaves, soffits, and porch ceilings
The classic umbrella wasp nest hangs flat against a horizontal surface a few inches back from the edge, out of the rain and out of your eyeline. Most people spot it in July, once the comb is big enough to see from below.
Deck rails, fence posts, and patio furniture
The undersides of deck rails, the hollow ends of fence posts, the folds of a closed patio umbrella. These are the nests that get people stung, because they sit at hand height where you spend your evenings. In the photo I'm treating the top edge of a window frame off a back patio, another sheltered ledge in the part of the yard you actually use.
Grills, mailboxes, and playhouses
Anything closed up and quiet for a few weeks in spring is fair game. I've pulled nests out of gas grills that hadn't been opened since April, mailbox lids, playhouses, and a garden hose reel.
Attic vents, shutters, and light fixtures
Louvered attic vents, the gap behind a shutter, and the top of a recessed porch light give a queen the cover she wants. Worth finding while the comb is still bottle-cap sized.

When a paper wasp nest can stay, and when it needs to come down
Paper wasps are working predators. WSU's fact sheet on the stinging wasps of the Pacific Northwest describes them hunting caterpillars all season and carrying them back to feed the brood, so the colony over your tool shed is quietly patrolling your vegetable beds. They don't turn scavenger in August the way yellow jackets do, and away from the nest they mostly ignore you.
So the decision is about location, not species. A nest over your front door, above the deck table, at hand height on a rail, or anywhere kids and dogs run past has to go, and so does any nest on a house where somebody reacts badly to stings. One under a second-story eave at the back of the lot, or on the far corner of a shed nobody walks behind, can often just be left. The colony dies off after the first hard frosts, and only next year's mated queens survive the winter.
I'd rather tell you that on the phone than sell you a visit you don't need. What to do about a paper wasp nest before I get there
Paper wasps are calm away from the comb and pointed about defending it. Almost every sting I hear about happened within arm's reach of it.
Do this
- Use your phone's zoom for the photo instead of leaning in under the eave.
- Move the grill, the picnic table, and the kids' toys out from under the nest.
- Check the mailbox, the grill lid, and the patio umbrella before you open them in summer.
- Tell me if anyone in the house has a sting allergy. That moves you to the front of the day.
- Flag the high nests you can't reach and leave those for me.
Skip this
- Don't knock the nest down with a broom or a hose. That drops a defensive colony at your feet.
- Don't spray from a ladder. If wasps come at you, you want both feet on the ground.
- Don't seal a nest into a soffit or vent. Paper wasps chew their way back out, sometimes into the room below.
- Don't swat at a wasp near the comb. Crushing one by the nest brings the rest over.
- Don't assume a quiet nest on a cool morning is empty. Everyone's home, just slow.
