Why Professional Removal Matters

Paper wasps are generally less aggressive than yellowjackets, but they will readily defend their nests when disturbed. Like other social wasps, they can sting multiple times, and disturbing a colony near an entryway, deck, or outdoor living space can quickly lead to painful stings and, for some individuals, severe allergic reactions or anaphylaxis. Attempting to remove a nest yourself can provoke defensive behavior and increase the risk of being stung. Sam's licensed treatment process safely eliminates active nests while minimizing the risk to you, your family, and anyone nearby.

How Do I Know They're Wasps, not Bees?

Wasps are a diverse group of stinging insects found throughout the Portland metro area, ranging in size from less than ½ inch to over 1 inch long depending on the species. Unlike bees, wasps typically have smooth, shiny bodies with very little hair, slender "pinched" waists, and long legs that are often visible in flight. While hundreds of wasp species occur in Oregon, the ones most commonly encountered around homes and gardens are yellowjackets, paper wasps, and bald-faced hornets. These social wasps build nests in a variety of locations, including underground burrows, wall voids, attics, eaves, shrubs, trees, sheds, fences, and other protected spaces around the home. They play an important ecological role by preying on caterpillars, flies, spiders, and other insects, helping to naturally control garden pests. Although many wasps are relatively non-aggressive while foraging, social species become highly defensive when their nests are threatened and can sting repeatedly, making professional identification and removal the safest option when a nest is located near your home or outdoor living areas.

About Sam the Bee Man

I developed an interest in bees and wasps while working alongside a local beekeeper and wasp removal specialist in Seattle, and over the years I’ve gained hands-on experience with honeybees, bumblebees, yellowjackets, hornets, paper wasps, and other stinging insects. I have a deep respect for pollinators and a particular fascination with the incredible diversity of wasp species native to our region. While I value the important ecological role these insects play, I also understand that bees and wasps do not always coexist safely with people, and that responsible removal is sometimes necessary when conflicts arise around homes, businesses, and public spaces. I strive to help both the Portland community by mitigating dangerous wasp conflicts and the local ecosystem by relocating important pollinators like honeybees and bumblebees whenever possible.
