Why Professional Removal Matters

Hornets are highly defensive of their nests and will respond aggressively if they perceive a threat. Like yellowjackets, they can sting repeatedly, and a disturbed colony may send multiple workers to defend the nest at once. Because hornet nests are often built on homes, under eaves, or in trees and shrubs near high-traffic areas, attempting DIY removal can quickly become dangerous and may increase the risk of multiple stings, severe allergic reactions, or anaphylaxis. Sam's licensed treatment process safely eliminates active hornet nests while minimizing the risk to you, your family, and your property.

How Do I Know They're Hornets?

Hornets build large, gray, papery nests made from chewed wood fibers, typically suspended from tree branches, shrubs, eaves, decks, and other protected locations. In the Portland metro area, the insect most people refer to as a "hornet" is the bald-faced hornet, which is actually a type of aerial yellowjacket. These striking wasps have black bodies with distinctive white markings on the face and abdomen and can grow to about ½–¾ inch long. Colonies are started each spring by a single queen and expand throughout the summer, often reaching several hundred workers by late summer. While hornets are beneficial predators that help control flies, caterpillars, and other insects, they aggressively defend their nests (often targeting the face) and can sting repeatedly when disturbed, making professional removal the safest option when a nest is located near your home or other high-traffic areas.

About Sam the Bee Man

I developed an interest in bees and wasps while working alongside a local beekeeper and wasp removal specialist in Seattle, and over the years I’ve gained hands-on experience with honeybees, bumblebees, yellowjackets, hornets, paper wasps, and other stinging insects. I have a deep respect for pollinators and a particular fascination with the incredible diversity of wasp species native to our region. While I value the important ecological role these insects play, I also understand that bees and wasps do not always coexist safely with people, and that responsible removal is sometimes necessary when conflicts arise around homes, businesses, and public spaces. I strive to help both the Portland community by mitigating dangerous wasp conflicts and the local ecosystem by relocating important pollinators like honeybees and bumblebees whenever possible.
