Why Professional Removal Matters

Bumble bees are valuable native pollinators that are generally non-aggressive while foraging, but they will readily defend their nest if it is disturbed. Because they often nest underground, beneath decks, or in other concealed locations, people may accidentally encounter a colony while mowing the lawn, gardening, or walking nearby, increasing the risk of multiple stings. Attempting to remove a bumble bee nest without proper identification and equipment can be dangerous and may unnecessarily harm these important pollinators. Sam's licensed approach begins with identifying the species and evaluating the nest location to determine the safest and most appropriate solution. In situations where it is practical and safe to do so, the colony may be carefully relocated to preserve these beneficial bees. When relocation is not feasible, the nest is addressed using professional methods that protect your home, your family, and the surrounding environment.

How Do I Know They're Bumble Bees?

Bumble bees are large, robust pollinators commonly found throughout the Portland metro area and are easily recognized by their round, fuzzy bodies marked with black and yellow bands. Unlike honey bees, bumble bees live in relatively small colonies, typically containing only a few dozen to a few hundred individuals. They most often nest underground in abandoned rodent burrows, beneath sheds, in compost piles, under decks, or within other sheltered cavities near homes and gardens. Bumble bees play an essential role in pollinating native plants, gardens, orchards, and agricultural crops, making them one of the most valuable pollinators in the Pacific Northwest. Although they are generally calm while foraging, bumble bees will aggressively defend their nest if it is disturbed and are capable of stinging multiple times. Because they are beneficial insects and often mistaken for other bee species, proper identification is important to ensure the safest and most appropriate management approach, with preservation and relocation considered whenever practical.

Bumble Bee Relocation

Bumble bee relocation is sometimes possible when a colony is accessible, healthy, and can be moved without causing unnecessary harm to the bees. Rather than eliminating these important native pollinators, the colony can, in select situations, be carefully relocated to a more suitable location where it can continue to thrive. I work with homeowners who maintain pollinator gardens, as well as individuals with large rural properties who welcome bumble bees as valuable pollinators and have appropriate habitat for them. While relocation is not feasible for every nest due to factors such as location, accessibility, or colony condition, each situation is carefully evaluated with preservation as the preferred option whenever it can be done safely and responsibly.

About Sam the Bee Man

I developed an interest in bees and wasps while working alongside a local beekeeper and wasp removal specialist in Seattle, and over the years I’ve gained hands-on experience with honeybees, bumblebees, yellowjackets, hornets, paper wasps, and other stinging insects. I have a deep respect for pollinators and a particular fascination with the incredible diversity of wasp species native to our region. While I value the important ecological role these insects play, I also understand that bees and wasps do not always coexist safely with people, and that responsible removal is sometimes necessary when conflicts arise around homes, businesses, and public spaces. I strive to help both the Portland community by mitigating dangerous wasp conflicts and the local ecosystem by relocating important pollinators like honeybees and bumblebees whenever possible.
