Why Professional Removal Matters

While many bees are beneficial pollinators, they can still pose risks when they establish nests in or around homes. Honey bees and bumble bees may become defensive if their colony is disturbed, while carpenter bees can damage wooden structures by tunneling into exposed wood. Attempting to remove or relocate bees without the proper knowledge and equipment can result in painful stings, structural damage, or unnecessary harm to important pollinator species. Sam's licensed treatment process accurately identifies the bee species and uses the safest, most appropriate removal method, protecting your home while minimizing risk to you, your family, and the bees whenever possible.

How Do I Know They're Bees, not Wasps?

Bees are a diverse group of pollinating insects found throughout the Portland metro area, ranging in size from less than ½ inch to over 1 inch long depending on the species. Unlike wasps, bees typically have robust, fuzzy bodies covered in branched hairs that help them collect and transport pollen as they forage. The bees most commonly encountered around homes and gardens include honey bees, bumble bees, and carpenter bees, each with unique nesting habits and behaviors. Honey bees live in large social colonies that may establish themselves in wall voids, chimneys, or hollow trees, while bumble bees often nest underground or in sheltered cavities, and carpenter bees excavate tunnels into exposed wood. Bees play an essential role in pollinating flowering plants, gardens, orchards, and agricultural crops, making them some of the most beneficial insects in the environment. Although most bees are non-aggressive while foraging, they will defend their nests if threatened and can sting when handled or disturbed. Because different bee species require different management approaches, proper identification is essential to ensure the safest solution while protecting these valuable pollinators whenever possible.

About Sam the Bee Man

I developed an interest in bees and wasps while working alongside a local beekeeper and wasp removal specialist in Seattle, and over the years I’ve gained hands-on experience with honeybees, bumblebees, yellowjackets, hornets, paper wasps, and other stinging insects. I have a deep respect for pollinators and a particular fascination with the incredible diversity of wasp species native to our region. While I value the important ecological role these insects play, I also understand that bees and wasps do not always coexist safely with people, and that responsible removal is sometimes necessary when conflicts arise around homes, businesses, and public spaces. I strive to help both the Portland community by mitigating dangerous wasp conflicts and the local ecosystem by relocating important pollinators like honeybees and bumblebees whenever possible.
